Abstract
Tourism is an activity of great economic importance; however, its disorderly and unplanned growth
has generated environmental and social impacts that highlight the need to promote sustainable
forms of tourism such as ecotourism. In this regard, it is essential to assess the capacity of
destinations to receive visitors without compromising the conservation of their natural resources.
From this perspective, the objective of this study was to determine the environmental carrying
capacity of the Rincón del Vides and Amanecer Mágico ecotourism centers, located in Villagarzón,
Putumayo, in order to establish sustainable use levels that guide management toward the protection
of ecosystems and the enhancement of the visitor experience.
A descriptive design with a mixed approach was applied. The methodology included a document
review, biophysical characterization through field trips, mapping and classification of points of
environmental interest, as well as flora and fauna inventories and water and soil resource analysis.
Georeferencing tools were used to ensure data accuracy. The results showed differences between
physical, actual, and effective carrying capacity due to environmental, social, and management
variables. Although the El Biólogo trail had the highest physical capacity (3,041 visitors/day), El
Estrecho recorded the highest effective capacity (265 visitors/day), reflecting better conditions for
controlled and sustainable tourism.
Finally, the comparison with research carried out in natural areas in Latin America showed
methodological consistency and values in line with those reported in previous studies, supporting
the consistency of the analysis carried out in this context.
